Keeping it Local: KLS Surveying

February 24, 2011

From time to time, we’ll share profiles of local businesses working on the school project. We’re started the series off with KLS Surveying, a Vernonia family-owned company providing the survey work. KLS, which originally surveyed local timber jobs, today works on diverse projects in seven counties in Oregon and Washington. Their current staff of six is half of what they were a few years ago and work has been “week to week” rather than being booked months in advance, says owner and Vernonia resident Don Wallace. The school project represents about 20% of their workload and has “probably saved laying off someone.” The fact that it is local helps cut down on transportation costs for the project. Wallace, whose family was one of many hit hard by the floods, is grateful Vernonia School is being built, “This is one of the few places where you have a community. Building a new school keeps it a community. “
