Bridge St (Hwy 47) Adjustments

March 2, 2010

In order to provide for an adequate flow of traffic on Hwy 47 it has been determined that a left turn lane is necessary for east bound traffic onto Missouri. This will necessitate ‘straightening’ Bridge St from the top of the hill to Missouri Ave. This would mean cutting approximately 15 feet (at the widest point) from in front of the fire station and the museum. I have met with both the Vernonia Rural Fire District Board and the Vernonia Historical Museum Board to discuss the impact this would have on their sites.

Current plans also call for a crosswalk leading from the east of Missouri to the south side of Bridge St. This crosswalk would not only include flashing signs, and be manned by student safety guards, but it would also have a pedestrian island in the middle of the road with sloped curbing to accommodate fire truck traffic in the area.

The original ODOT estimate for the construction of this left turn lane was $6.8 million. However, this included both cutting into the hillside and building a significant retaining wall. Our engineers have determined that we should be able to do both the Missouri Ave and Bridge St upgrades for what was originally estimated to be the cost of Missouri alone.

We have engineers preparing all of this information to present to ODOT, as it is subject to their approval.
